High school seniors showcase final project: Tiny houses

Program part of NISD's Construction Careers Academy

SAN ANTONIO – Senior students from Northside Independent School District’s Construction Careers Academy completed tiny houses this week.

Students have been working on building tiny homes all semester long, as part of their curriculum. They were challenged to work together to design, engineer and construct a fully-functional house.

KSAT first showcased the school in March.

The homes sit on four to six trailer wheels and measure around 200 square feet. They are equipped with lofts for beds and full bathrooms.

Wednesday morning, a group of judges comprised of school staff and construction industry professionals ranked the homes. The winner was given a trophy for their construction of their home.

The program is for students who want to make construction a career. Many said they were happy with the finished product.

"It’s just rewarding that you are giving somebody a home after this, because, essentially, you are giving someone a piece of their life,” student Emily Benton said.

There will be a silent auction Saturday, and the community is invited to attend. The tiny house showcase will start at 9 a.m. at Warren High School, located on 9411 Military Drive West.
