SAN ANTONIO – Two local firefighters were hospitalized after battling a mobile home fire late Tuesday night in Northeast Bexar County.
The fire was reported around 11:30 p.m. in the 8400 block of Braewick Drive.
Fire officials said a Converse fire captain experienced heat exhaustion and a Windcrest fire lieutenant received airway burns. Both were taken to local hospitals but are OK.
While fighting house fires is always dangerous, the weather this time of year makes it more perilous.
"Heat is one thing, but the bigger component is humidity," said Bexar County ESD 10 Fire Chief Robert Hogan. "Last I saw, we were in the 70s, and with the moisture on top of the high temperatures, on top of 1,000-degree fire, it's extremely dangerous for us as firefighters."
Officials said a caller was convinced that someone was inside the double-wide manufactured home.
"We did make entry into the house to look for occupants, (but) we did not find any," Hogan said.
He said the home had the electricity shut off but was getting power from an extension cord next door.
Damage was estimated at $35,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
#UPDATE I’m told the injured fire captain and lieutenant are doing much better and are in good spirits. The investigation into what started the fire is ongoing but there is about $35,000 in damages. pic.twitter.com/WrHMx4yOiy
