3 people in critical condition after ATV crash on Southside

2 men, 1 woman taken to University Hospital

SAN ANTONIO – Two men and one woman were critically injured Saturday after an ATV crashed into a tree in San Antonio's South Side.

The crash happened between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the 400 block of East Ansley.

When EMS arrived on the scene, they found one person unconscious. All three were immediately rushed to University Hospital with head injuries. They are all listed in critical condition.

Investigators said there were no safety belts on the vehicle, and they believe the female passenger was riding on the back of the ATV. They said the ATV was not meant to sit three people.

San Antonio Fire Captain Wayne Purcell said it did not appear any of the passengers were wearing helmets.

"They [may have flown] off somewhere, [but] we couldn't find them. Some people showed up at the scene, some family members. I don't know exactly who found them, [because] they didn't present themselves as a witness," said Captain Purcell.

Investigators said it is not illegal to ride an ATV in the area where the crash happened. The area it crashed in was a very grassy area with no marked riding trails.

Authorities have not released the names of the victims or their relation to one another. They said they will likely need to speak with the victims to determine how the crash happened, because there does not appear to be any witnesses.
