57-year-old man cut out of SUV after crashing into tree

SAN ANTONIO – A 57-year-old man was taken to the hospital after crashing his sport utility vehicle into a tree Tuesday morning, San Antonio police said.

The crash happened just after 8 a.m. on SE Military near Goliad Road.

At this time police said they aren't sure why the man drove off the road. The Ford Explorer jumped the curb and rolled down a grassy area where it eventually wrapped around a tree.

Firefighters had to cut through the SUV and managed to get him out though the passenger's side, officials said. 

The man was taken to an area hospital by ambulance in critical condition. He suffered a head injury.

Police said they don't know if he had a medical issue but they did say he was not avoiding another car and that no one forced him off the road.
