SAN ANTONIO – Construction at Alamo Stadium is now complete.
Constructed in 1939, Alamo Stadium, also known as "The Rock Pile," was in need of a facelift.
After a bond passed in 2010, the stadium went under construction at the beginning of 2013 to complete $35 million in renovations.
"We are very proud for our kids to finally have a state-of-the-art facility," said SAISD Superintendent Dr. Sylvester Perez. "(It) needed renovations."
Upgrades were made in the stadium's infrastructure, but more noticeable will be the upgrades to the press box, seating, concessions and locker rooms.
A main focus of the renovations was to bring the stadium in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. There are now more seats dedicated to those with disabilities, as well as more ramps and an elevator.
As SAISD gets ready to open the facility for the upcoming football season, there will also be soccer games, track meets and band competitions held at the stadium.
A rededication ceremony of Alamo Stadium will take place on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The first football game will be played Aug. 28 as Lanier High School takes on Central Catholic.
