Battle of Flowers Parade kicks off

Battle of Flowers Parade begins at 12:30 p.m. Friday; KSAT to air parade live on-air and online

SAN ANTONIO – The 2015 Battle of Flowers Parade kicked off at 12:30 p.m. Friday, despite heavy rain in San Antonio during early morning hours.

Hundreds of thousands of revelers lined up along Broadway Street Friday to celebrate one of Fiesta's signature events.

This year's theme, "This Land is Your Land," highlights our beautiful country and our American heritage.

The first Battle of Flowers Parade was held in 1891 to honor the fallen heroes of the Alamo and to commemorate the victory at the Battle of San Jacinto which gained Texas independence from Mexico.

Since then, thousands of spectators have lined up along the 2.6 mile route downtown to witness the spectacular floats, sights and sounds.

Spurs owner and HoltCat CEO Peter Holt is the grand marshal for Friday morning's parade. VIA will also offer park-and-ride service for the event.

A vanguard celebration will be held at 11:30 a.m. before the parade which kicks off at 12:30 p.m.

KSAT will air the Battle of Flowers Parade live on air with hosts Mark Austin and Leslie Mouton. It will also be livestreamed on KSAT.com.
