BCSO: Man barricaded in West Side home found dead after allegedly shooting 13-year-old boy, woman

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – UPDATE 8:40 p.m.:

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the hours-long standoff on the Far West Side is over after the man who had been barricaded in the home died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Salazar said the teen who was shot multiple times is still in critical condition and is undergoing surgeries. He said the woman who was shot once is in stable condition.

The sheriff said authorities used a drone to try to look into the windows of the home to spot the man. They also used thermal imaging to try to get heat signatures from inside the home.

The thermal imaging picked up some heat signatures coming from dogs, the sheriff said.

The Sheriff’s Office then deployed its tactical robot to go into the home. The robot went into one of the bedrooms and found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A flash bang was used to ensure the man wasn’t playing dead. A tactical team then went into the home.

Salazar said he believes this was a family violence situation. He said the Sheriff’s Office was never able to establish communication with the man and believes he may have been dead from the onset.

The Sheriff’s Office did not identify the man.

Salazar said deputies will continue assessing the scene to try to find more evidence.

Neighbors will be allowed back into their homes when BCSO gives the go-ahead.

UPDATE at 6:30 p.m.:

Sheriff Javier Salazar provided an update regarding the gunman who they said shot a woman and a 13-year-old boy and has barricaded himself in a far West Side home for more than three hours.

Salazar said the woman, who is in her late 30s and early 40s, and the boy are both still alive but in critical condition at University Hospital. He said negotiators have not established communication with the gunman.

Three teens who live at the residence, were heading home from school when their bus was diverted due to the incident, Salazar said. They have since been relocated and are in the process of being picked up by family members.

Bexar County sheriff's deputies have swarmed a far West Side neighborhood where a man has barricaded himself in a home after at least two people were wounded in a shooting.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said a woman, who is in her late 30s or early 40s, was shot in the torso. He said a boy, believed to be 15 or 16 years old, was shot multiple times in the chest. He said deputies found the victims either outside the home or near it.

They were both taken by AirLife helicopter to University Hospital where Salazar said they are still alive but in critical condition.

Salazar said the man, in his early 40s, is in the home where he has barricaded himself. Deputies have yet to reach negotiations with him, Salazar said. 

"In situations like this, the last thing we want to do is rush things. We like to do this calmly and as slowly and by the numbers we can," Salazar said.

BCSO said the shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m at a home in the 2900 block of Ash Field Drive near Marbach Road.

Aerial footage showed more than 15 BCSO patrol units outside the home, including some SWAT personnel. The footage also showed two AirLife helicopters at a nearby school.

Officials with the Southwest Independent School District said three of its schools, Big Country, Kriewald and Scobee, are currently on lockdown. However, district officials said parents can go to the schools and pick up their children.

The BCSO spokesperson is urging residents to avoid the area.
