Medical Examiner: Juan Jose Del Toro, 25, drowned while attempting to flee police

SAN ANTONIO – A suspect who led police on an overnight chase Tuesday and drowned in the San Antonio River at Espada Park has been identified.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office said the man has been identified as 25-year-old Juan Jose Del Toro.

San Antonio Police Department officials said Del Toro was involved in an accident with another vehicle around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on SW Military Drive near Presa.

Deltoro fled, police said, and attempted to swim across the river. He began to struggle, and officers lost sight of him and called for assistance.

Authorities searched Espada Park with dive crews, but he was not located after several hours and authorities called off the search.

Divers from the San Marcos Area Recovery Team (SMART) resumed dive recovery operations around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The dive team recovered Del Toro's body around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
