Capital murder suspect ordered to be tried in adult system

Jonathon Sanchez was 16 at time of murder

A Friday hearing was held to determine whether a capital murder case should be moved from the juvenile system into the adult system.

SAN ANTONIO – On Aug. 24, 2007, Vicente Alvarez Huerta, 24, was shot to death during a carjacking.

His murder was considered a "cold case" until August 2010 when an informant identified Sanchez and four other teens as Huerta's killers.

Three teens, including Aaron Alaniz, who was convicted of doing the shooting, have been tried and are in prison.

A female suspect has plead guilty and is awaiting sentencing.

On Friday, 289th District Court Judge Carmen Kelsey ordered that Sanchez' case be transferred to the adult system for trial.

Kelsey set bond for Sanchez, who is now 22, at $500,000.

A date for his trial has not been set.
