Cibolo family feeds hungry from front lawn food pantry

Katherine Campos came up with the idea about a year ago

SAN ANTONIO – At first glance, the metal cabinet on Katherine Campos’ front lawn might appear to hold tools or even clothing.

Inside, though, it’s all about compassion. It’s full of food for the hungry.

“We just wanted to help those people out who don’t have other options,” she said, explaining why she decided to open the makeshift food pantry on her front lawn.

As a single parent, Campos said she understood the struggles some people may face.

She wanted to make sure that hunger isn’t one of them.

"I know they tried to go to different food banks and everything, but it's, sometimes, a wait and a process. They have to fill out applications,” Campos said.

With permission from the city of Cibolo, Campos created the food pantry -- about a year ago. It is a cabinet with the words "food pantry" spelled out on the sides in duct tape..

The way it operates is simple: Anyone who needs help can take all they want. Those who are able can donate to the cause.

"It's good to help people. Everyone's been in a struggling time at one point or another,” said her 11-year-old son, Javion.

The sixth grader and his 8-year-old cousin, Michael, often pitch in, helping keep track of the inventory.

Neighbors also help out with food donations.

Campos said she has no doubt the efforts are appreciated by those who need help.

"There's some who leave thank you notes, and sometimes, they'll knock on the door. But most of the time, most people come at night," she said.

While the goal was to help other families, Campos said her family has benefited, in the form of lessons learned.

"They’re a bit more generous now. They don't ask as much for things for themselves,” she said.

Thanks to the free help they offer, people in need don’t have to ask for much either.
