City survey asks about climate damage, 'The Good Life'

Online survey available until April 7

SAN ANTONIO – The city is asking residents to fill out an online survey about “La Buena Vida,” or “The Good Life,” which focuses on climate damage.

The city’s Office of Sustainability put out the online survey this week.

The first question is open-ended and asks people to define what the good life means to them.

The second question asks what stands in the way of having the good life in San Antonio and offers choices such as transportation, housing and jobs.

From there, the survey centers on climate damage and asks questions such as “Do you agree that damage to our climate is primarily caused by human activity?” and “If you are skeptical that damage to our climate is occurring, what are some of the reasons?”

Some of the answer choices include “I don’t believe in science” or “I haven’t read enough information to know.”

Doug Melnick, the city’s chief sustainability officer, said his office is gathering the information to gauge how much climate damage concerns residents and affects their lives.

“We really thought we should start asking questions around climate because we have some challenges there, as we've seen with some major storm events recently. And just get the community to start thinking about: Is this of major concern for you?” Melnick said.

Roughly 860 people have taken to the survey so far.

Melnick said no decisions will soon be made based on the information received. Instead, it will be part of the city’s SA Tomorrow Sustainability Plan and the information will be presented to City Council members.

“I think the goal is to tie quality of life and how we experience it on a daily basis to very specific threats or challenges we face,” Melnick said.

You can take the online survey through April 7.
