Defense granted continuance in gruesome murder trial

Victim beaten, dismembered; body parts burned

SAN ANTONIO – There were heated accusations from the attorney representing accused killer Daniel Lopez, 28, during his murder trial on Wednesday.

Lopez and co-defendant Candie Dominguez, 38, are accused of beating Jose Luis Menchaca to death, dismembering his body and burning the body parts in October of 2014.

After Dominguez testified against Lopez, as part of a plea bargain, Lopez’ attorney Charles Bunk accused the state of not providing information on her medical history in a timely manner.

“She testified on and on that my client did this and did that,” Bunk told Judge Ron Rangel.  “But afterwards they don’t tell me she’s crazy -- I had to find out on my own.”

Bunk said that Dominguez is bi-polar, psychotic and suicidal. And that she has been hospitalized for treatment of mental disorders.

Prosecutors insisted that they provided the information about Dominguez in a timely manner according to the law.

Rangel denied Bunk’s motion for a mistrial, but granted his request for a continuance until April 10 to allow time for Dominguez to be mentally evaluated.
