Family, community gather at viewing for slain SAPD detective

Marconi killed during traffic stop Sunday

SAN ANTONIO – People began to file into Porter Loring Mortuary Sunday afternoon to pay respects to slain San Antonio police Detective Benjamin Marconi.

Many who came said they never knew the 20-year police veteran, but wanted to pay their respects.

Hundreds of people came out Sunday evening to show their support for the family of Detective Benjamin Marconi at the fallen officer's viewing and Rosary.

Edward Gonzales' said when he learned about what happened to Detective Marconi, it hit close to home.

Gonzales said his brother, San Antonio police officer Eloy Gonzales was also killed in the line of duty on August 15, 1977 and hearing about Marconi's murder hurt him and his family all over again.

"I know what this family is going through, the kids, the parents, the police department," Gonzales said. "I know how it feels."

More than a hundred agencies from all over the country showed up at the Porter Loring Funeral Home to pay their respects.

"Due to the circumstances, I came to offer my condolences to the family on behalf of all the firefighters in Illinois," said Jim Bruno with the Associated Firefighters from Illinois.

Tina Ynfante said she and her family knew Marconi when they started with the Palomino Patrol.

"He's been a big part of our family when he was with us," said Ynfante. "And, all I can say is I want to let the family know that we will miss him and he was a great man."

While it was packed at the funeral home on Sunday night, San Antonio police officials said they are expecting more people Monday at Detective Marconi's funeral.

Marconi was killed during a traffic stop on Sunday. Police said Otis McKane walked up to Marconi's patrol unit while he was writing a ticket and shot him twice.
