Fire rages for 2 hours overnight in vacant Southwest Side building

Building reportedly vacant, SAFD says

SAN ANTONIO – Arson investigators are looking into what caused a massive fire at an abandoned commercial building on the Southwest side Saturday night.

Crews responded to a call reporting flames in the 7200 block of New Laredo Highway and battled the blaze for more than two hours.

Investigators say the building was unoccupied so no one was injured. Battalion Chief Rick Johnson said they believe the building is an old machine shop because there was a lot of equipment inside. They have deemed the blaze suspicious because there is no power to the building.

Firefighters said they had several barriers like fences, overgrown trees and padlocks to get through making it difficult to put out.

Crews estimated about $100,000 in damages to the building.
