SAN ANTONIO – Greater San Antonio area McDonald's said it is helping students get ready for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, testing with free breakfast.

This is the third year that local McDonald's owners are offering free breakfast. Officials said new to this year is an additional day of free breakfast.
The first free breakfast is from 6 and 9 a.m. Tuesday for students in third through eighth grade and their teachers. Officials said the free breakfast offer is an Egg White Delight McMuffin or Fruit and Maple Oatmeal, with 1 percent milk or apple juice and apple slices.
Teachers will need to show a valid school ID. Officials said the offer is dine-in only.
The second free breakfast is not only for high school students and teachers, but also parents, officials said. Everyone on Thursday can redeem a free Sausage McGriddle through the McDonald's mobile app.
Officials said this deal will be available all day.
"We are excited to bring this STAAR free breakfast back to students and teachers during a stressful testing week," McDonald's owner Ruben Flores said. "We also knew how important it was to add the high schools into this annual program to assist more students with a good morning."
Almost 50 percent of U.S. children are not eating breakfast every day, according to data from 2010 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation. Research shows children who eat breakfast show improvements in math, reading and standardized test scores. McDonald's officials said the breakfast items offered Tuesday are all 450 calories or less.
Coupons are not necessary for the Tuesday free breakfast. Officials said any child from third to eighth grade who dines in with their parent or guardian at a participating McDonald's restaurant between 6 and 9 a.m. Tuesday. The mobile app deal is needed to receive the free breakfast Thursday.
Officials said the free breakfast is also being offered to students in the Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Lubbock, North Texas, San Angelo, Waco and Wichita Falls areas.
