Groundbreaking held for road project at Brooks City Base

Roadway to accommodate new UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine

SAN ANTONIO – A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for an updated roadway project in the Brooks City Base area.

The $9.1 million project will widen and upgrade Dale Erwin Drive. The updated roadway will help accommodate those attending the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine, which is set to open in July 2017.

Brooks City Base President Leo Gomez hopes it will also encourage more people to live, work and play in the area.

"I really expect and believe that within the next five to seven years there will be a good 7,000-plus people living literally on Brooks. Attending school at brooks, working at Brooks, coming to retail and restaurants at Brooks, and enjoying an incredible park in Southeast San Antonio that will connect to the San Antonio River," Gomez said.

Once completed, the roadway will be renamed Kennedy Hill, in honor of President John F. Kennedy. In his last official act as president, Kennedy dedicated the buildings at Brooks City Base that will now be used by UIW.
