Hill Country residents bracing for freeze

KERRVILLE, Texas – Residents in the Hill Country, under a winter storm warning and with freezing rain and ice expected, are bracing for a deep freeze.

Late Friday, temperatures had dipped into the low 30s and were continuing to drop. Drivers were still on the road but using extreme caution.

"(I'm) definitely taking precautions, driving a little slower then I normally would," said Eddie Bierschwale.

De-icing agents have been used to treat bridges and roads, with crews hoping to stop the ice from causing accidents.

But most drivers said they are already aware of the best way to keep safe.

"I'm used to it, but the best thing to do is just stay off the roads," said Waylon Joy.

And while the freezing temperatures may be tough on some, others said the cold weather isn't a problem.

"This one is not going to be a big deal, but I think we are fixing to have some way colder weather coming along," said Jack Burch.

Kerrville police, along with the Kerr County Sheriff's Office, are asking everyone to try and stay indoors and avoid the roads if at all possible.

"What we are asking you to do is if you don't have to, don't go out. We are just going to try and keep people from going out on the roadway or even going outside," said Lt. Mary Krebs, with the Kerrville Police Department.

The real danger will come overnight and in the early morning hours.
