SAN ANTONIO – A special board meeting for the Judson Independent School District is set to take place Wednesday night.
On the agenda is the possibility of rescinding the name of Dr. Willis Mackey High School.
The school was named after the district's former Superintendent who retired last year, and the topic has since been widely debated.
The Judson Independent School District dealt with a social media backlash in response to the name after the board voted 5-2 in favor.
Despite the negative feedback the district has defended the decision to name the school after Mackey.
Back in September Judson ISD spokesman Steve Linscomb was not surprised by the passionate feelings being shared on social media.
"Whenever you make a choice like this, especially when you have a high profile school being named, not everybody is going to be happy," Linscomb said. "I think the board did as good a job as they possibly could in terms of vetting the list of names according to what policy is in place currently."
