LA VERNIA, Texas – New details have been revealed in the La Vernia sex assault case. Two of the accused athletes learned they will never attend La Vernia High School again.
The La Vernia Independent School District board of trustees voted to uphold the district’s expulsion of both students. The superintendent told KSAT after the meeting that the evidence was conclusive.
“The district is deeply committed to protecting the safety and well-being of all its students and does not tolerate any behavior that puts its students at risk of harm,” Superintendent Jose Moreno said at the meeting.
After two and a half hours, the board of trustees sealed the educational fate of two of the 13 students who have now been criminally charged for allegedly hazing and sexually assaulting fellow teammates.
The expelled students now have a choice of graduating from two alternative schools. One is run by Nixon Smiley CISD, the other by Floresville ISD.
“They will still be provided a proper education. We’ll continue to move forward at this point,” Moreno said.
The school board president would not comment after the vote. The lawyers and families of the accused did not want to comment either.
Two other students were going to have appeals at the meeting but decided not to fight the decision. Their expulsions will stand. The superintendent did not say whether they are minors or adults.
Moreno said he doesn’t know if there will be more appeals.
“They are all of our students … but when you look at the student code of conduct and look at our board policy, and you look at the Texas Education Code, there are certain requirements we have to follow,” Moreno said.
