Late-night fire destroys Southeast Side auto shop

Hazmat crews and a private company assisted in cleanup

SAN ANTONIO – Arson investigators are working to determine the cause of a late-night fire that destroyed a South Side automotive shop.

Firefighters responded to Campos Automotive on Steves Avenue and South Hackberry Street around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators said it appeared the fire had been burning for quite a while. Heavy metal doors might have concealed the fire inside before anyone saw the flames, firefighters said.

Firefighters fought flames and smoke for nearly an hour. Hazmat crews also responded to the scene after oil from the shop ran off into the street. A private company handled cleanup.

"The first thing that I thought was another South Side business going down, and the South Side just is coming up, so it's kind of heartbreaking to see it," customer Hubert Parker said.

Campos Automotive was a total loss, firefighters said.
