CIBOLO – A student at Bryon P. Steele High School was taken to a hospital after being bitten by a small rattlesnake while in the breezeway outside the campus' gymnasium.

Officials with the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District said the incident happened around 10:20 a.m. on Friday.

Steele coaches who were in the area killed the snake to avoid it from biting anyone else. The student was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and possible treatment, district officials said.

The district said recent rain, along with ongoing construction in the area, might have caused the rattlesnake to venture onto school grounds.

A maintenance crew inspected the affected area and will treat it as needed.

SCUCISD officials detailed the incident on its Facebook page.
