SAN ANTONIO – The lines at San Antonio International Airport will be a little longer this week. Not only are thousands of civilian travelers expected to fly across the country to visit their families, military members from San Antonio’s installations are expected to join them, too.
Nearly 2,800 Army soldiers flew out of San Antonio on Wednesday; many have not been home in months.
"We've just been doing training and going through whiskey school at the moment and becoming combat medics,” Mykayla Leiser said. “We're excited to go home ... as much as we love training, we miss our families. Not getting to see them for a long time is hard."
Volunteers greeted the outgoing soldiers and helped get them to their gates, answered questions and handed out snacks.
San Antonio police officers also handed out breakfast tacos, while the USO offered free gift wrapping after the TSA checkpoint.
An addtional 1,000 members of the Air Force are expected to fly out Friday.
