SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police arrested a man who they said nearly beat a woman to death with his fists and repeatedly struck her in the head with a flashlight.

Police said the man, Jesus Loza, 25, is also known to be an active member of Texas' most violent gang network, Tango Orejon.

The vicious assault happened around 5 p.m. Saturday at a west side home located in the 300 block of Faust Avenue, not far from Rosedale Park.

Responding San Antonio police officers said when they got to the home, they heard screams and cries that sounded "muffled," as if someone was covering another person's mouth. Police said once inside, they found Loza with blood on his hands, knuckles and arms.

According to a preliminary report, officers went to another room, where they found a naked woman covered in blood with several cuts across her body and her eyes swollen shut.

"The level of blood across her body was a clear identifier someone had intentionally struck her enough times with the intention of causing serious bodily injury and/or possibly death," an officer said in the report.

Police said the victim was "bleeding profusely" from the top of her head. When officers asked her what Loza had hit her with, she responded: "Everything."

The victim was rushed to University Hospital, where she was first placed in the trauma room and later moved to the intensive care unit. Her condition was not detailed in the report.

According to the report, Loza initially called 911 to report he was stabbed by the victim and that he "got upset and beat her up." His injuries were not consistent with his statement, the report said.

The report said Loza told an SAPD detective he "punched" the victim at least 10 times and struck her in the head about four times with a flashlight.

Loza is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon-serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony. His bail was set at $100,000.

According to the report, Loza was charged in April 2018 for assault on family by choking/strangulation, but the charge was later dismissed.
