New group of cadets begin San Antonio Police Training Academy

49 new cadets training to become SAPD officers

SAN ANTONIO – A brand new group of cadets on Monday had their first day of class at the San Antonio Police Training Academy.

Chief William McManus and City Manager Sheryl Sculley were there to welcome the 49 cadets to the academy.

KSAT 12 News spoke with some of the cadets, who said they're nervous but excited to serve their community.

"It's a hard job, but somebody has to do it and I felt it was my job to give back to the community,” cadet Brianna Cifuentes said. “So it is something I am willing to do and train through."

Over the next several months, the cadets will learn how to solve crimes and protect the Alamo City.

“I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to serve the community so this is something I am looking forward to doing,” cadet Jacob Barcena said.

They will also undergo crisis intervention training, which teaches them how to treat the people in their community with compassion, integrity, fairness and respect.
