Police officers in Amarillo honored the late Officer Justin Scherlen’s memory by escorting his kids to school on their first day.

Scherlen was severely injured in a traffic accident last September. He underwent multiple surgeries and physical rehabilitation following the accident.
Scherlen died Aug. 4 while vacationing with his family in New Mexico. Autopsy reports have not yet confirmed the cause of death.

He is survived by his wife and four children.

If his death resulted from wounds sustained in the automobile incident, Scherlen will be considered to have died in the line of duty. The last APD officer killed while on watch was Officer Mark Simmons, who died in 2008, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page website, via Amarillo.com.
