Are you smarter than a second grader? Future voters show what they know about politics

Woodlawn Academy students answer political questions ahead of election

SAN ANTONIO – Kids say the darnedest things. In this election, many of them seem to know what’s going on. They listen more than adults think.

Some 2nd, 4th and 8th graders from Woodlawn Academy on the city’s near west side answered questions about presidential politics.

Lennon, a 2nd grader, knows who is president right now. It just took him a moment to think about it.

“Right now,” he said as he paused to think. “Obama,” he said proudly.

The children all agreed that a woman has the right to be president. Nia said one of the minimum requirements is a certain age.

“You just have to be 35,” she said.

The students at Woodlawn also participated in a mock election, where they had to register to vote. Then, poll workers, their classmates, walked them over to the ballot box that art students created, and made their presidential selection on a tablet.

Teacher Ana Fenath said that as her students figured out what was happening, they became ecstatic about the process.

“When they were registering, they were kind of confused. But as they came and started seeing lines, they were asking, ‘When is it my turn to vote?’ So the excitement was there and they were trying to keep secret who they were voting for. Others were ready to share for everybody to vote for their candidate,” Fenath said.

The lesson involved making decisions, and Fenath believes this gives them a real-world experience.

“I think they’re definitely seeing that they are part of the experience of our government, and that you may not be in office, but you as a citizen have the responsibility to vote, and let your voice be heard,” she said.
