Record-breaking September rain impacting sewers in SA

Most recent spill happened in 1800 block of Austin Highway

SAN ANTONIO – Crews with the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) continue to work on spills associated with the record-breaking rain the area is having this month.

The most recent spills occurred in the 1800 block of Austin Highway near Ira Lee Road, as well as in the area of Starcrest and Wurzbach Parkway.

SAWS said it will initiate cleanup of the area once the floodwaters recede. According to a press release, there are no adverse impacts expected because the spill has been heavily diluted by the stormwater.

Areas that are prone to sewer overflows are the focus of projects replacing and upgrading capacity of sewer lines. Officials said overall, SAWS has more than $170 million in capital improvements budgeted in 2018 to replace and upgrade sewer lines throughout San Antonio.
