SAN ANTONIO – The third-annual Head for the Cure 5K will be held in September, but the kickoff reception was held Wednesday in downtown San Antonio.
The event, which raises thousands of dollars for brain cancer research and awareness, is held in honor of KSAT 12's late news director Jim Boyle, who died of brain cancer in March 2014.
Over 1,500 runners and walkers took part in last year's 5K. Erin Boyle Dempsey, race planner and daughter of Jim Boyle, said organizers are excited about spreading the word and registering more people to participate in this year's race.
"I feel like we have the mechanics down for the event," Dempsey said. "But I really want to get the word out, and I really want people to come and support it before, but really on race day, we want big numbers."

Event organizers met Wednesday with sponsors to grow support for the event.
Elks Lodge #216 of San Antonio donated $1,200 to Head for the Cure at Wednesday kickoff.
The race is set for Sept. 24. Proceeds benefit the Head for the Cure Foundation.
