SAN ANTONIO – Hundreds of people were talking about San Antonio's new "fixit" bike repair stations Friday afternoon when they were announced on the city's parks and recreation social media pages.
It's a big step for the city to become more bike-friendly. Currently, San Antonio holds a bronze rating from the League of American Bicyclists.
The newly-installed stations are at the Tobin, MLK and Valero trailheads.
David Stephenson's been biking for 35 years and frequents Tobin Park.
"I carry a tool with me so if something needs tightening, I can usually take care of that." Stephenson said. "A lot of people probably don't have tools they carry and they'll probably use this."
Bicyclist John Purnell also loves the city's investment.
"Typically when I have a flat or something goes wrong with my bike, I just throw it in the back of my truck and go," Purnell said. Now he and others can repair their bikes on the spot.
The stations have screwdrivers, wrenches, tire levers and even an air pump. They came at a price tag of around $1,000 each, according to San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department special project manager Brandon Ross.
The city plans to monitor how well the stations are taken care of before a decision is made to install more.
San Antonio also has a bicycle and pedestrian program to raise the level of cycling and walking for daily travel as well as improve safety. More information can be found here.
