The act was signed by President Richard Nixon on March 22, 1972, and established a national nutrition program for seniors.

Police Chief William McManus and fire Chief Charles Hood visited with seniors and provided safety checks.

As most of you know, 80 percent of our calls are medical emergency calls," Hood said. "A lot of these customers that we are taking food to this is preventing them from calling us.

San Antonio’s Meals on Wheels program serves more than 35,000 senior citizens a day.
