SAPD arrests gunman accused of shooting 3 people outside Pegasus nightclub

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police arrested a man who is accused of being the triggerman in a shooting that wounded two men and a woman outside a popular nightclub.

Police chief William McManus said Jose Rincon Hernandez, 44, of El Paso, was arrested and faces three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

McManus said police identified Hernandez as the lone shooter through interviews with witnesses. On Tuesday around 2 p.m., Hernandez turned himself in and homicide investigators later recovered a weapon used in the shooting.

Hernandez was at a taco truck outside Pegasus, located in the 1400 block of North Main Avenue just north of downtown, when he became upset over the long wait time and made a racial slur toward two men in front of him, according to police.

After a confrontation which led the trio to be escorted out by security, police said Hernandez went to his car to grab a gun and then fired shots.

Three people, an employee and two patrons, were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

McManus said Hernandez was initially thrown out of the club but later returned to the taco truck. He said the shooting was not a hate crime toward the LGBTQ community.

"It was not driven by anything other than (Hernandez) being an angry patron who was removed from the club because he wasn't wanted there anymore," McManus said. "There is nothing further to fear in the community."

McManus said investigators believe Hernandez was intoxicated at the time of the shooting.
