South San Antonio ISD names lone finalist for new superintendent job

Dr. Alexandro M. Flores expected to be offered contract in 3 weeks

SAN ANTONIO – Dr. Alexandro M. Flores has been named the lone finalist in the race for the South San Antonio Independent School District’s superintendent position.

The board of trustees voted unanimously on the decision Tuesday.

After a state-mandated 21-day waiting period, trustees are expected to offer Flores an official contract.

Since 2015, Flores has been serving as the superintendent for the Palacios Independent School District, where he supports four campuses and about 1,400 students, according to a news release.

“I’m ecstatic for the (new) opportunity,” Flores said. “It is just a great district to help lead and take to the next level. Everybody knows that the future of public education is changing, so now it is about adapting and offering parents choices. And this is exactly the vision that South San has.”

Flores has been recognized throughout his career for improving student achievement.

Before working with Palacios ISD, Flores was the assistant superintendent of academic pupil services for the Natalia Independent School District.

The South San Antonio ISD board spent two days last week conducting interviews.

“Dr. Flores has the vision and the knowledge to continue to move (us) forward as a destination district of choice,” board President Angelina Osteguin said.

Trustee Edward Mungia added, “I think we are all very excited to welcome Dr. Flores to our South San Family. I am very proud it was a unanimous vote today, and we look forward to working with him."

The current superintendent, Dr. Abelardo Saavedra, recently announced his retirement, which led to the vacancy.
