Southwest Side blaze destroys garage, classic car

Home sustains smoke, water damage

SAN ANTONIO – A fire on the Southwest Side on Saturday burned up a garage and a classic car.

The blaze started when a man turned on his car. A neighbor saw what was going on and rushed over to help.

The men tried without success to put out the car fire with a hose but were unable to.

“I had to try to help him. I couldn’t save his car. That’s his pride and joy. But I said, ‘You know, that’s all replaceable,’” said Jose Lopez, the man’s neighbor.

The San Antonio Fire Department believes the car possibly leaked fuel and then ignited when it was started. The department said by the time the fire was out, the classic Jaguar, a Cadillac and the garage had burned.

The house also sustained smoke and water damage. Damage is estimated at about $100,000.
