Strawberry farming tradition continues in Poteet

Poteet Strawberry Festival kicks off Friday

SAN ANTONIO – Some of the best strawberries in Texas can be found in 22 acres of farmland near Poteet.

Oak Hill Farms has been a part of Cora Lamar's family for over 30 years.

"We pride ourselves on quality and freshness," Lamar said.

All kinds of crops are grown at Oak Hill Farms and shipped to H-E-B, including strawberries.

The strawberry plant is not an easy one to grow. The planting season begins in September. The first batch planted was bad for all growers in the area.

"We had a really hard year," Lamar said. "All the growers did, because our first set of plants that came in were diseased."

At Oak Hill Farms, 75,000 plants were lost and they quickly had to replant in October.

They were able to bounce back and have strawberries ready for the Poteet Strawberry Festival, which starts Friday.

Oak Hill Farms, along with other local growers, will compete for the best strawberries and sell their crops on festival grounds all weekend long.

"Only the growers can sell on the grounds, so you're guaranteed Poteet strawberries," Lamar said.
