Texas Attorney General's Office alleges DRT mismanaged The Alamo

DRT: Not accurate description of current group

SAN ANTONIO – After more than two years of investigation, the Texas Attorney General's office said the Daughters of The Republic of Texas have mismanaged The Alamo.

In a 38-page report released Tuesday, the office says it received a complaint alleging misconduct by the DRT and senior members of its board of management back in February 2010. A few months later, the report said the DRT trademarked "The Alamo" without permission from the State of Texas - which objected to the move. By June that year, the investigation was underway.

The A.G. said:

  • The DRT failed to properly maintain The Alamo in good order and repair
  • They mismanaged state funds entrusted to the DRT's control
  • The leadership and managment breached the DRT's fiduciary duty to the State of Texas as trustee of The Alamo.

The DRT released a statement late Tuesday. It said:

"We are very disappointed that our organization did not receive the courtesy of a copy directly from Greg Abbott's office," said Karen R. Thompson, President General of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Inc.

"Further, DRT is shocked at the outrageously inaccurate conclusions within the report," said Thompson. "It is important to note that the OAG report contains no required changes for DRT to be compliant with State law," said Thompson.
