Texas going to one state sticker on windshields

State inspection, registration to be combined in single sticker

SAN ANTONIO – Beginning March 1, when your inspection sticker is scraped off your windshield, you will not get another one.

The state is moving to what it calls a Two Steps, One Sticker program.

"We're still doing the inspection process, but we're taking away the inspection sticker," said Sgt. Jason Reyes, Department of Public Safety spokesman.

Texas motorists must still get vehicles inspected every year to make sure the brakes, tires, turn signals and more are road-worthy.

"We've had tons of people asking about it," said Dewayne Allen, with Cambridge Auto Center.

Under the new system, when an inspection is complete, a new sticker will not be slapped on the windshield.

"We're actually going to print out a piece of paper for you so you can provide it to the tax office or mail it in along with your proof of insurance in order to get your registration," Allen said.

That paper is called the vehicle inspection report.

Inspectors will also upload the results of an inspection to the state's database. Motorists' cars must pass inspection before they can get a registration sticker.

Many cars currently have inspection and registration stickers showing two different months. To help consumers figure out what to do when, the state's website TwoStepsOneSticker.com includes a calculating tool. Motorist can type in the expiration months, and the tool will advise what steps to take.

The first year is a transitional period, giving drivers time to get their dates in sync.

"The purpose of this, less clutter on the windshield and obviously allows our public to just remember that one sticker," Reyes said.
