‘This black car just flew around me,' woman witnesses police chase

2 men arrested after East Side pursuit

SAN ANTONIO – A woman said she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Amy Bartlett was on her way to pick her kids when she found herself at the center of a high-speed chase on San Antonio's East Side on Tuesday afternoon.

"I saw police cars in front of me and behind me. I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh! What’s going on?’ So I pulled over and then this black car just flew around me and went through the grass to get through police officers," Bartlett said.

San Antonio police said the chase started when they tried to make a traffic stop around 4:45 p.m. near Interstate 35 and Walters Road.

The car was then followed by a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter, DPS troopers and Bexar County sheriff's deputies. San Antonio police opted not to get involved in the chase, per department policy.

The chase lasted about 45 minutes and ended when police said the suspect’s car circled through a neighborhood on the city's East Side several times before crashing in the yard of a home at the intersection of Summer Fest and Sunrise Creek.

"He could have crashed into me or the cops could have crashed into me trying to get to them," Bartlett said.

Police said they found marijuana inside the car and were trying to figure out if the vehicle was stolen.

The men inside the car were arrested and will be charged with evading arrest and possession of marijuana, police said.
