SAN ANTONIO – Candles bearing the name and logo of the San Antonio Spurs appear to be among the hottest items on store shelves lately.
Sister Reed, owner of Reed Candle Company, said her business recently has seen a huge jump in the sales of the sports-themed variation.
“Good. Very good,” she said. "They really start selling a lot when (the Spurs are) in the playoffs."
Reed and her family have been making a wide variety of candles in their headquarters on the city’s West Side since the 1930s. People all around the world often use them to pray for power and good fortune.
Last year, with approval from the National Basketball Association, the company began producing candles bearing the names and logos of NBA teams. There are two different versions for each.
“This one is selling the best,” Reed said, holding up a candle with the famous Spurs symbol on a black and silver label.
It’s easy to understand why fans would be pulling out all the stops right now, with the hope of getting a win.
The team is headed into Game 3 Friday night of what was already a tough series against the Houston Rockets. Now the Spurs will have to do it without the help of star player, Tony Parker, who suffered a season-ending injury earlier this week.
Reed said she is happy the candles have caught on.
"It makes me very proud,” she said. “It's deviating from our regular line."
The Spurs candles are sold at all HEB and Walmart stores. Candles for other teams are available only in their home cities.
