Hundreds of patients transported from coast to SA hospitals

Crews prepare for days

SAN ANTONIO – Two hundred fifty patients in hospitals along the Texas coast have been evacuated and transported to local hospitals in San Antonio as Hurricane Harvey approaches.

"I think this is a time when hospitals come together just to take care of people the way that we always should. It's a great opportunity for us to be there for people," said Dan Bonk, CEO of Nix Medical Center.

Nix Medical Center has taken in a total of 11 patients, and workers expect many more.

"We have capacity in San Antonio. We really do. So there’s nothing to worry about for anyone who lives in San Antonio," Bonk said.

The Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council, or STRAC, is coordinating patient transports by figuring out which hospitals have open beds and which ones are best for each individual patient.

A STRAC spokesman said patients are designated by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

STRAC said every hospital is the Alamo City is participating and doing their share to help.

Bonk said his hospital has been preparing for Hurricane Harvey for days.

"You always have your generators ready. We have procedures for our staff on call to make sure that they are all going to be here. We have people that are ready to sleep here, to stay for 24 hours and then other staff to come in after them," Bonk said.
