Descendants honor first Canary Islanders arrival in San Antonio

Present day San Antonio founded in 1731

SAN ANTONIO – A celebratory Mass was held Sunday by the descendants of the first Canary Islanders who arrived in San Antonio in March 1731.

The celebration was held at San Fernando Cathedral.

Spain’s King Phillip the fifth sent residents from the Canary Islands to establish a new world.

The islanders found their way to South Texas and built the first civilian colony in present-day San Antonio.
