SAN ANTONIO – The South San Independent School District is in the midst of community meetings. The main topic is a sensitive one for parents, with declining enrollment the district is reaching out to community members as they try to determine how many campuses might close.
A document obtained by KSAT 12 shows a year-old plan to close specific South San ISD schools.
In March 2016, a demographer explained how campuses were underutilized and enrollment was projected to continue to decline. The demographer also proposed solutions, including consolidating Kazen Middle School and closing Athens and Five Palms elementary schools.
Most of the schools were to be closed after the 2017-2018 school year.
Kindred Elementary School also made the list, but was not part of the final proposal.
After the presentation and a question and answer period, the board then voted no on the demographer's proposal and instead opted to seek public input.
A spokeswoman said district officials have not finalized the list to come out this month, and are still taking public input. She said what KSAT obtained “is not a list, but recommendations by a demographer that was presented at a board meeting in March of 2016.”
Asked last month if he had any schools in mind for closure Saavedra said it was too early to tell.
Saavedra was not available to speak to a KSAT reporter, by deadline, Wednesday night. He said he will sit down for an interview on Thursday to answer questions.
