Taft HS principal dies after battle with ‘lengthy illness'

Additional grief counselors on campus

SAN ANTONIO – It's a day of sadness and mourning at Taft High School. The school's long-time principal, Tommy Garcia, passed away Tuesday night.

Northside Independent School District superintendent Dr. Brian Woods said Garcia died after a lengthy illness.

Woods said Garcia had been the leader at Taft for more than 12 years.

Garcia was remembered for building strong relationships with his students, staff and teachers over the years.

Woods said he visited the campus Wednesday morning and saw several students holding a vigil and sharing memories of their interactions with Garcia.

"It's a very challenging day there,” Wood said. “Even though the staff has known that Mr. Garcia has been sick for a while, it's always a challenge when this kind of thing happens."

Woods said a team of counselors will be at the school over the next several days to support students, families and the staff members as they grieve.

No details have been made available yet regarding funeral services.
