ROCKPORT, Texas – The schools in the towns of Rockport and Fulton have been closed indefinitely while repairs are made, the superintendent announced on Facebook.
The message on Wednesday comes just days after Category 4 Hurricane Harvey slammed the beach communities.

“We have just received our formal damage assessment and it has been decided that school will be closed indefinitely,” Aransas County Independent School District Superintendent Joseph Patek said. “We have an amazing team beginning work on repairs so we can open school as quickly and safely as possible.”

Though no timeline has been given for repairs, the district said they plan to rebuild and repair all five schools. Aransas County is expected to be without power for another one to three weeks.
The district said on Aug. 26 that the high school sustained the most damage, but it was unaware of water damage to the campuses.
“It is our plan and desire to get our campuses up and running so we can welcome our students home as soon as possible. Please continue to follow us on Facebook and the district web page for weekly updates,” Patek said.

The Texas Education Agency said Patek has been in contact with Commissioner Mike Morath in the days since the storm with 130-plus mph winds came ashore and said the commissioner knew the situation was “dire.”
