San Antonio – The Wonder Theatre, formerly known as the Woodlawn Theatre, is now putting on “Ragtime” for the first show of its 2023 season.
A musical that was produced in 1996, and yet is connected to this day in age, Director Chris Rodriguez tells us what to expect.
“It has so many subjects that we still deal with every day. If you turn on the news, there is racism, police brutality, there is a feminist movement, there is craziness going on in politics. It is all being reflected on stage as well,” Rodriguez said.
For Edward Burkley, playing the role of Coalhouse Walker Jr. isn’t a new addition to his resume. He portrayed this same role 10 years ago at the San Pedro Playhouse.
“The older I am, the more I understand a little more of the nuances of the show and what the writers and directors were really trying to portray,” Burkley said.
This production is one to spark conversation. Megan DeYoung, who plays the role of Mother, talked about her favorite aspects of “Ragtime.”
“It’s just a moment where Mother, Father, Younger Brother, everybody is realizing they are learning something, or trying to learn something, or moving in a different direction, and the melody and the harmony. Oh it will get, it is so, so gorgeous,” DeYoung said.
This will be the last production at their current location before they move to their new theatre in the Wonderland of Americas.
