KSAT Kids: SAPD receives kid’s donation to protect K9s; anniversary of NASA Challenger explosion; vaccine latest

This week’s student spotlight is on an 11-year-old who made an amazing donation

The donation was made possible through fundraising and a monetary award from The Shining World Compassion Award by Supreme Master Ching Hai, an award that recognizes the efforts. (KSAT)

Hello parents, teachers and students!

Today is a somber day as we remember the anniversary of the NASA Challenger explosion that occurred back in 1986. Thursday is the 35th anniversary of the tragedy, one that killed all the crew members on board, including Christa McAuliffe, who would have been the first teacher to make it to space. Six astronauts, including San Antonio resident Dick Scobee, also perished in the explosion that happened just 73 seconds after liftoff. NASA honored their lives with a remembrance ceremony that took place Thursday morning.

The city of San Antonio continues to deal with high COVID-19 numbers, but luckily more and more teachers are starting to get the vaccine. A question that remains, however, is, when will the vaccine be available to children? Presently, the vaccine is only approved by the Federal Drug Administration for people over the age of 18 but kids as young as 12 are now being vaccinated in trials from both Pfizer and Moderna. KSAT recently reached out to a UT Health infectious disease expert as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for answers on the vaccine and kids. You can read more by clicking here.

In this week’s KSAT Kids’ spotlight, we highlight 11-year-old Brady Snakovsky, an Ohio boy who raised a total of $21,000 and donated 18 tactical vests to the San Antonio Police Department to help protect their K9s. I agree with the reader who said, “what a wonderful story!”

Meteorologist Kaiti Blake has another science lab this week, this time a “walking water” experiment that will help children learn about color by simply mixing a few household items.

For those students still seeking additional schooling help, the San Antonio Public Library continues to offer resources to help with their lessons. We also have a list of places offering free Wi-Fi for students and their families.

Have a great day everyone!
