KSAT Kids: San Antonio student fixes family’s pipes during winter storm; snow day slideshow; Google doodle contest

This week’s spotlight is on 15-year-old who applied her lessons during last week’s winter storm

Hello parents, teachers and students! Are you enjoying the warmer weather now after all the snow and cold we had last week?

It was quite the sight seeing San Antonio shut down to due to the severe winter storm. Near the downtown newsroom, we even got massive amounts of snow at the Alamo. It’s a shame so many people lost power and water for long stretches and are seeing damage as a result of it. KSAT viewers sent in plenty of pictures and video of students having full-on snow days. We hadn’t seen snow like that since 1985! Be sure to check out our snow-day slideshow here.

The flip-side to being out of school for the week is that the education of students once again had to suffer. Due to the weather conditions and lack of power, schools across Bexar County and South Texas had to close and districts are only now assessing and repairing the damage to their facilities.

In this week’s KSAT Kids’ spotlight, we highlight 15-year-old Meadow Quigley, a sophomore at Construction Careers Academy, who knew exactly what to do when her family’s pipes burst during the winter storm. Quigley studies plumbing, pipefitting and welding and fixed the issue, giving her family running water. She said in the future she looks forward to helping others with these types of problems. Well done, Meadow!

Students that are looking to have their art displayed have one more day to enter Google’s doodle contest, a contest that will give the winner a $30,000 scholarship. Teachers, along with nonprofit leaders and after-school programs are welcome to enter Doodles on behalf of their K-12 students, as long as the entry form is signed by each student’s parent or guardian. Have fun doodling!

And for those students still seeking additional schooling help, the San Antonio Public Library continues to offer resources to help with their lessons. We also have a list of places offering free Wi-Fi for students and their families.

Have a great day everyone!

As a kid, many of us are afraid of the dark, but what we don’t know is that the dark is very helpful to the environment and nature.
