SAN ANTONIO – Saturday, Aug. 15, is National Lemon Meringue Pie Day. One restaurant here in town is known for their homemade pie and also their comfort food.
Tip Top Café has been a staple in San Antonio since 1938. Three generations of the DeWese family have been running the café.
Linda DeWese is now in charge of the place that hasn’t changed much through the years.
“The fish on the wall my dad and brother caught years ago. The deer heads are actually older than I am, it’s very nostalgic,” said DeWese.
Not only is the place a part of the community but most of the customers have been eating at Tip Top Café their entire lives.
“I’ve lived in San Antonio all my life, and my mom and dad used to bring us in here back in the 50’s,” said customer, Janette Bateman.
For over 75 years, Tip Top Café has been serving many here in San Antonio, and one of the favorite menu items is the chicken fried steak.
Right away you notice the difference as the gravy is placed underneath, so the chicken fried steak doesn’t get soggy.
Make sure to bring your appetite when eating here, there is no shortage of food on these plates.
And we can’t forget about the homemade pies. “They are all homemade, all made here every morning.”
After a full plate of chicken fried steak and a slice of lemon meringue pie, we now know why this establishment has been in business for so long.
“It’s a wonderful honor to serve the city of San Antonio,” said DeWese.
