SAN ANTONIO – The Alamo Candy Co. started in 1991. Felix Samame drove around neighborhoods selling candy, and eventually he and his wife began making their own.
"He knew what people wanted," current owner William Samame said. "He started with the candy and then started making our own candy, the Chinese candy, the chamoy and lucas."
William Samame grew up watching his parents create the Alamo Candy Co., which has already outgrown its current building and will soon be moving to a bigger location.
All the customer favorites are made by hand daily inside the building at 2738 Blanco Road.
The recipes for many of the candies were created by William's mother.
One of the many flavors is chamoy. William Samame would not give up the recipe for chamoy, but said it is made with natural ingredients.
Many people have grown up eating these sweet and sour treats, and what was once sold from the back of a car can now be found in stores all over the state.
"It's a proud feeling, every time I walk into HEB or Walgreens and see our product there," William Samame said.
