UVALDE, Texas – A little over 80 miles west of San Antonio is the town of Uvalde, Texas.
With a population of over 16,000, most know it as the hometown of actor Matthew McConaughey and Franklin D. Roosevelt's vice president, John Nance Garner.
The town is also known for having one of the oldest opera houses in Texas.
The Uvalde Grand Opera House, as it is known, was built in 1891 by a group of businessmen. One of the earliest photographs of the inside was taken in 1908.
The opera house would exchange ownership several times until 1917, when Garner bought the building. During the time he owned it, he transformed into an office building.
The beauty of the place would lose its luster through the years and eventually close down.
The city of Uvalde eventually bought the building from Garner’s heirs in 1978 for $10. The city decided to restore the building and reopen the theater.
Right now, the building is restored enough to open again, and host events and plays.
More restoration is in the works, but now the ghosts of its past may haunt the building.
