The first step is to know how old your American flag is, and what it's made of.
For older, vintage American flags, the best way to clean them is to have them dry cleaned. Especially if the flag is valuable, this is the best method.
For newer flags made of higher quality materials -- such as acetate, nylon and cotton – it's recommended that you wash the flag by hand, using cold water and laundry soap. When you're done washing it, you should let the flag air dry.
Flags made out of 100 percent cotton can be put in the washing machine, but should be washed on the cold water setting. After washing, the flag should be air dried.
